Grace Burque, one of the founders of Diversity
Employment Source says, “Disability is a civil rights issue. Separate
but equal is never equal. People with disabilities are able to work,
want to work and DES is here to provide business with the resources
and information they need to hire qualified candidates. And in the
process improve their bottom line.”
DES is doing its part to contributing to a strong economy. DES provides a vehicle for businesses to post jobs at no cost, allowing them to avoid sites with exorbitant fees. Many DES applicants meet your company's desire to be ethnically and gender diverse. Beyond usual "diversity", our pool includes applicants with disabilities (the largest untapped minority group). People with disabilities are an overlooked candidate pool, not because they can’t work but because of fears employers have about hiring them. Thirteen years after the Americans with Disabilities Act took effect, only one-third of individuals with Disabilities in America are employed even though more than two-thirds of unemployed people with disabilities say they would like to work. We must turn this untapped pool into an ocean of opportunity. The job turnover rate for people with disabilities is 20%, compared to a 150% turnover rate in non-disabled employees. After Carolina Fine Snacks in Greensboro, NC, started hiring people with disabilities, absenteeism dropped from 20% to less than 5%; and tardiness dropped from 30% of staff to zero. Accommodations for workers with disabilities are not as costly as many businesses believe. The majority of people with disabilities (70%) don't need any special equipment or accommodation to perform their job. According to the Job Accommodation Network, the average accommodation costs $50 and the majority (75%) cost nothing. The cost of accommodating qualified workers with disabilities is forty times less than the cost of training and replacing workers.
